Welcome to CrossFit Jääkarhu. We opened our doors on Monday, October 6, 2014. Our purpose is to develop a local community in Austin, Texas that is focused on identifying goals and getting results. Below is information how to start training at CrossFit Jääkarhu. See bottom for class schedule.
Drop-ins are $20 per visit. All are welcome to drop in to the Fitness classes. If you have been in CrossFit for more than six months, you may drop in to the Sport classes. Follow the Drop-in link below to reserve your spot in class.
Not sure which class to drop in to? You can check our program descriptions below … but here are the basics: All of the programs are CrossFit, If you want to get a good sweat in and your goal is to get in shape, go for the fitness class. For skill development, barbell work and a metcon, try the Sport classes.

New to CrossFit?

We offer a menu of training options on select Saturday’s at CrossFit Jääkarhu. The intent is to give athletes a specific area to focus on in a 1-hour session. Options include weightlifting, gymnastics, conditioning and more. View the Saturday schedule and sign up here.
CrossFit Jääkarhu Programs
Once you have made the decision to “get real” about your health and fitness, what do you do next? The Fitness program is here to help you find those answers. The program is designed to meet you where you are and help you develop a fitness base. This means focusing on increasing strength and mobility while conditioning your body to get in shape. This program is complete, allowing long term fitness lovers to enjoy themselves alongside those looking to advance to the next levels. It’s hard work but who says we can’t have a little fun along the way.

The Sport Program, led by Jessica Estrada, is comprised of many types of athletes. The two main groups are those that have developed a basic level of fitness and desire to get more time in the gym and advance their skill sets. It is also for athletes who would like to become competitors, but need more practice and technical instruction on Olympic lifts and gymnastic movements. This program is also a great option for multi-sport competitors who want to supplement CrossFit into their training.
This program is designed to suit the needs of athletes that wish to stay in this class permanently but also helps to equips athletes that wish to move onto the sport program with the skills needed to do so. Our focus is to get athletes moving faster and more efficiently. Quality of movement is key in the advancement of an athlete. We want to develop “the Complete Athlete”. The focus is to get athletes moving faster and more efficiently. Quality of movement is key component of advancement.
All of our Sport classes are one hour and meets four days a week. Skill development is emphasized while refining an athlete’s fitness. Classes begin with an Olympic lifting, gymnastics or a strength component and ends with a conditioning piece
Sport athletes need pull-ups, double-unders and the ability to kick up into a handstand.
Competition – Karhu Method
CrossFit Jääkarhu’s Competition Program is designed specifically for those who have decided to make CrossFit their sport. Athletes who enter the program know what is takes to train 5 days per week and understand that excellence comes from attention to detail, consistency and constant learning.
Coach Michael Winchester is the Leader and Head Coach of the Competition Program. He has developed and coached numerous Regional individual athletes and teams and has also coached two teams to the CrossFit Games (2014, 2015).
Athletes who are interested in joining the Competition Program to prepare themselves for the Sport of Fitness should be able to complete 80% or more of the program’s training sessions as prescribed (Rx). While you do not need to be at an elite level to enter the program, it is expected that you have been training CrossFit for at least two to three years, are proficient in bodyweight movements and weightlifting, and have developed the capacity and durability to handle higher-volume and higher-intensity training.
The yearly template is based around the CrossFit season (March-July). Each phase of the season has a different feel, flow and purpose to it. At different times in the season, athletes will develop their GPP, strength, gymnastics and work capacity in different ratios, volumes and intensities. Extra work is prescribed strategically for those who need it, to emphasize a strength or to shore up a weakness or imbalance.
Athletes considering the Competition Program should be proficient in their bodyweight movements, Olympic lifts and should have a competitive level of conditioning to bring it all together. Most of the athletes in the program have been CrossFitting for at least 2 years, and while not everyone in the program competes, the program is designed on a yearlong template with the central focus of developing athletes who will excel at the Regional and Games level.
Coach Winchester’s vision for the program is to develop each athlete to reach their full potential and help them attain their goals. Long-term athletic development is always the top priority; the program seeks to create and transform athletes into Regional and Games-level competitors and teams.
